18 August 2009 – Applications are now open for two short residencies in early 2010

Michael King Writers’ Centre /Creative New Zealand Short Residencies 2010

Applications are now open for two short residencies in early 2010.

Applications close on 30 September 2009

The Michael King Writers’ Centre is calling for applications for two eight-week residencies at the Michael King Writers’ Centre in Devonport in early 2010.

The residencies are offered with the assistance of Creative New Zealand. The aim is to support New Zealand writers and to promote New Zealand literature by providing an opportunity for two authors to work full-time on a major project.

Each residency is for eight weeks. The dates available are:

Wednesday 20 January to Tuesday 16 March, 2010; or
Thursday 18 March to Wednesday 12 May, 2010

A stipend of $8,000 will be paid for each residency. Payment of the stipend will be by arrangement with the Michael King Writers’ Centre.

The residencies are open to established authors, working on a project in fiction, non-fiction, drama or poetry. Applicants should be writers of proven merit and usually resident in New Zealand or hold New Zealand citizenship.

The successful writers will be able to use a bedroom at the Michael King Writers’ Centre and work in the writer’s studio.

How to apply

There is no separate application form. Applications should include a letter with contact details (address, phone and email), a CV outlining the writer’s writing experience and publishing record, and an outline of the project proposed for the residency (maximum 1,500 words). Applicants should indicate which dates they prefer.

Applicants should read the terms and conditions - click to download PDF - of the residency before applying.

Applications close on Wednesday 30 September 2009. All applications will be acknowledged by email or post. No late applications will be accepted. The selection panel expects to announce its decision before the end of October.

Applications should be sent by post or email to:
