29 September 2009 – Heritage Week events

The Michael King Writers’ Centre will hold two events as part of North Shore Heritage Week this year.

Open afternoon: Sunday 4 October, 2 pm to 4 pm

The Friends of the centre will host an open afternoon on Sunday 4 October, from 2 pm to 4 pm. Visitors will be able to see through the centre, based in the heritage Signalman’s House on Mt Victoria, and enjoy the collection of literary memorabilia. The centre is half way up the road to the summit of Mt Victoria in Devonport. Parking is on top of Mt Victoria or on nearby Kerr Street.

Walking the Seaward Road: Robin Hyde’s North Shore
Sunday 11 October, 2 pm
Holy Trinity Church Hall, Church Street Devonport

The centre will hold an event to celebrate the life and work of Robin Hyde, author of The Godwits Fly. Her short, tragic life reflected many of the difficulties faced by early New Zealand women writers and journalists. Speakers will include Derek Challis, her son and biographer, and poet Michele Leggott, who edited a collection of her poems, plus others who will provide an insight into her career and work.

Tickets are $5, door sales only.
