09 June 2010 – Michael King Writers' Centre Residential Workshop 2010
Truth lies somewhere
Biography, Autobiography and Memoir
Vaughan Park Retreat Centre, Long Bay, Auckland
October 23 -25 2010
The Michael King Writers’ Centre runs a second Residential Workshop for writers in Auckland this Labour Weekend. Designed for emerging and mid career writers, the symposium style workshop is limited to 20 participants and offers a focused, interactive environment at a seaside venue with fellow writers and respected professionals.
This year the Residential Workshop takes a more intensive look at Biography, Autobiography and Memoir. Fiona Kidman, Philip Temple, C.K. Stead, Rachel Barrowman, Charles Royal, Deborah Shepard, Gordon McLauchlan, Diane Brown, Paul Diamond, Liz Allen, Geoff Chapple, Peter Simpson and publishers Sam Elworthy, Lorain Day and Bob Ross will discuss their experiences in research, writing, book structure and publishing.
Over three days and two nights, participants will have opportunities to discuss issues with speakers and publishers and to report on their current projects. Sessions will focus on literary, historical and collective biography, approaches to Maori history and biography, memoir vs autobiography, creative non fiction, research and publishing.
The Centre hopes the Residential Workshop will continue as an annual event, alongside its other courses and events run in Devonport. Last year’s inaugural Residential Workshop featured Anne Salmond, Brian Boyd and others sharing their expertise in history and biography and there are plans for the 2011 workshop to support those writing the science underpinning ecology and sustainability.
Writers with some publishing record are invited to apply for the 2010 Residential Workshop. Applications, which should include a writing CV, close 18th July 2010. The cost is $440.00 plus GST and includes accommodation for two nights and all meals.
The full programme, speakers’ biographies and application details are available at www.writerscentre.org under Residential Workshops.
