Workshops for Young Writers (2008)

(Feb/Mar 2008)
Thanks to a grant by the Devonport Community Board, the Michael King Writers’ Centre was able to run a series of writers’ workshops for young people in February and March 2008.

Senior students, nominated by their Heads of English, attended from Takapuna Grammar, Westlake Boys and Westlake Girls High Schools, Kristin School, Rosmini College and Carmel College.

Tutors were Christine Cole Catley, who has been running writers’ workshops at schools, universities and in the community for many years, and Ros Ali, now of St Cuthberts and previously of Epsom Girls Grammar, who has specialised in working with young writers.

Guest tutors included Chris Price, who is The University of Auckland/Creative New Zealand writer-in-residence at the Michael King centre this year, and Brigit Lowry, the Buddle Findlay Sargeson Fellow for the first half of 2008. Others were Australian David Reiter, and Kevin Ireland and Elizabeth Smither, both poets and novelists.

The students worked on a number of stories and poems during the workshops. Samples of their work follow.
