Dominic Hoey – 2024 Australian Residency Exchange – to Varuna

Dominic Hoey is a Tāmaki Makaurau poet, author and playwright. His bestselling novels Iceland and Poor People With Money have established him as one of Aotearoa’s most distinctive voices.

He is the co-founder of Dead Bid Books and the founder of Learn To Write Good, a creative writing programme for at-risk youth in the justice system. He has written and performed two one-man shows, and was formerly a rap MC and slam poetry champion.

His novel 1985, developed in part during his Varuna residency, was published in May 2025.

Dominic was the recipient of the 2024 CLNZ Contestable Fund Grant.
