Hazel Phillips – 2026 Australian Residency Exchange – to Varuna

Hazel Phillips is a New Zealand author, journalist and history enthusiast. She has written five books, including Great Hearts (2026), Fire & Ice (2025), Solo (2022), Wild Westie (2014) and Sell! (2013).

She has held the Whiria Te Mahara History Grant and the 2026 Friends of Hocken Collections Award. Hazel is a past resident of the Michael King Writers Centre and the Robert Lord Writers Cottage, and was the inaugural recipient of the Luna Foundation Writers Residency in 2025.
