Anne Beaglehole: 2009

Ann Beaglehole was born in Hungary and came to New Zealand with her parents in 1956 after the Hungarian uprising against the former Soviet Union. Much of her writing has been about refugee experiences and displacement. Her novel Replacement Girl was published in 2002 by Tandem. She has written several works of history including A Small Price to Pay and Facing the Past, about refugees from Nazism settling in New Zealand. She has received international awards including a Goethe Institute award and an award from the International Research Institute at Brandeis University. She says her stay at the Michael King Writers Centre in 2009 was both useful for her writing and provided a relaxing break from Wellington, with the peace and quiet enabling her to make a start on a new novel.
